- Washing machine time is different from conventional time.
- Having a paper towel holder built into your cabinets does not make you fancy.
- Having a cast-iron pan will make men who think they know more about cooking than they do nod approvingly.

- When the bus pulls up, it’s better to stand to the left of the sidewalk, not in front of it. (The bus driver had to tell me that one.)
- The word drought does not rhyme with wrought. I’ve known this for years, and I still don’t really know it.
- Time speeds up and slows down.
- Occasionally, convenience surpasses the beauty of doing something the “right” or “old-fashioned” way. Looking at you, electric kettle, you thing of beauty, you.
- Radiators (the heating kind) are loud.
- Sometimes, the questions are more important than the answers.
- Staying up until 3 am and waking up at 7 am will always feel terrible. Who knew?
- Telling yourself that you’ll go to sleep at a reasonable hour does not mean you will. At times, it even means you know you won’t.
- Allowing myself to be embarrassed can be a good thing.
- Resentment — some of it anyway — is preventable.
- Completing chores you’ve been putting off for months can feel really good! Again, who knew?
- Living in the suburbs is a breath of fresh air after living in the city. Sometimes literally.
- The trees can change color overnight.
- Things can (and will) get better.
I love these. I can relate to much of what you wrote, and they’re so funny and smart.
It would be very cool to keep an ongoing list during this time in our lives.
