On sleep:
The other night:
I think it was the brownie, now that I reflect back on it. Dark chocolate messes with my sleep. After having been in bed for an hour and still awake, I was waiting for sleep. Looking forward to it. Mostly so that I could wake up.
I looked at the clock at 12:30 and thought, Yay, I can wake up in 6 hours.
The unfortunate thing is that while I did fall asleep at 12:45 or so, I had one of those “I’m in my mid-50s, I shouldn’t eat dark chocolate after 6 pm” sort of nights and woke up at 1:30, 2:20, and 5:10. Finally I hauled myself out of bed at 6:15, and decided it was time. One shouldn’t waste a perfectly good bed being wide awake, like that.
The other, other night:
I was dreaming that for some reason I was dealing with trying to keep snakes and insects in a bucket and they kept escaping. And so I was trying to capture the snakes. These weren’t nice little pet snakes. They had the big venomous glands on the sides of their faces and were fairly long; maybe 3 feet. I had just grabbed one and was thinking, “how am I going to manage catching all of these things, when I’m not even that good at holding on to one?”. Then I woke up. And I lay there thinking, “snakes? and insects? Why were these escaping in a house? Could this dream have to do with Ella’s house centipedes?” And so I thought, I need to remember this dream…It’s about snakes and insects and trying to capture them. I was trying so hard not to let the dream slip away, when I suddenly woke for real, again.
Oh, how odd. I was dreaming in a dream.
But more than that, I was trying to remember and figure out a dream, in my dream. I wonder what’s going on in my subconscious there?
On politics:
It’s early October and I’ve been feeling quite hopeful that #45, tRump, He Who Shall Not Be Named, whatever you want to call him, will be leaving the White House soon.
On conspiracy theories:
I saw a piece by John Oliver about conspiracy theories and why people need them* during frightening times. *to help explain the things that don’t make sense.
And also watched the movie The Social Dilemma, which discussed how the algorithms in YouTube, FB, Twitter, Instagram, are set up to show you videos, posts, ads, that reaffirm your beliefs and, if anything push you towards conspiracy theories, rather than truth. Essentially, the more you’re on your phone, iPad, computer, the more it leads you down unhealthy paths. It also says that we are beginning to not know the difference between truth and untruth. This is exactly what Mark and I were talking about a while ago. So frightening.
On road trips:
Where do you stop to use the restroom? AirB&B or Hotel? How safe or unsafe is this? and is it worth it?
Yesterday I killed an enormous house centipede. It was at least two inches long and running straight at me. I had been sitting on the floor doing my bookmaking homework and suddenly, something moving towards me, way too fast, out of nowhere. Peyton and I were screaming. It had stripey legs or antennae or something (I tried not to look to close). Very stressful experience.
Maybe you had a premonition.
Ella,
I am certain that my dream had to do with you telling me about the numerous house centipedes you’ve seen since you’ve been in your apartment. They should be one of the plagues. House centipedes seem far worse than locusts.
I too saw the Social Dilemma. It really opened my eyes to why we’re so polarized in this country. I think this issue may be as serious As global warming and maybe as intractable.
Sleep
I share in your agony!
Dreams:
They seem to be in full force Nicole. Strange dreams. Some work related and many not.
RE: Road trip. AirBnB-take wipes.
Bathrooms along the way: anywhere…just wear your mask and wash your hands and use a paper towel to fill your car with gas (don’t touch the handle or the keypad).
